Behind the Camera at a Microsoft Event in Munich

Not every shoot happens in your home city. And sometimes, the ones that take you somewhere new are the ones that teach you the most.

A while back, I packed my gear and flew from Prague to Munich for a corporate videography project — a DDX event focused on interface and UI design, organised for Microsoft. It was a full day of work, a new city, a new team, and a new set of challenges. Here's how it went.

The Brief: Recording a Microsoft DDX Event in Munich

The DDX event brought together professionals from different countries, all converging in Munich to talk about interface and UI design. My job was to capture it all on video — specifically the stage talks, which are the heart of any event like this. These are the sessions people fly in for. They need to be recorded properly.

I collaborated directly with the event manager, the organiser, and the founder. That kind of access is actually really valuable as a videographer — when you're working closely with the people running the event, you understand the flow, the priorities, and the moments that really matter. You're not just a camera operator on the side — you're part of the team making the event work.

A Full Day on the Ground

We started at 10 in the morning and wrapped at 6 in the evening. Eight hours of active shooting — stage coverage, speaker recordings, event atmosphere. No long breaks, no downtime. You're always watching, always ready, because something is always happening.

This is something I genuinely enjoy about corporate event work — the intensity of it. You have to stay sharp the entire time. Every stage talk is a one-take situation. If a speaker says something powerful, if there's a moment of real energy in the room — you need to have already been ready for it. There's no going back and asking them to do it again.

Stage talk recording in particular requires a very specific kind of focus. You need to think about framing, movement, audio levels, the speaker's positioning — all simultaneously, for hours. It's mentally demanding in a way that I think a lot of people underestimate from the outside.

What Flying to a Shoot Adds to the Challenge

Working in a new city adds a layer of logistics that you don't have on home turf. You're travelling with equipment, navigating an unfamiliar venue, coordinating with a team you're meeting for the first time, and doing all of that while also preparing mentally to deliver professional results from the first moment you walk in.

Munich itself is a great city to work in. Organised, efficient, clean. The event infrastructure there is solid — which makes a videographer's job easier. When a venue is well-run, you can focus entirely on the creative work rather than spending energy managing chaos.

What This Kind of Work Really Looks Like

I think there's sometimes a romantic idea of what a videographer's job looks like — travelling to interesting places, filming important events, working with big names. And yes, all of that is real. But so is the 6am flight with a heavy camera bag. The hours on your feet in a loud venue. The focus it takes to stay fully present and switched on from the first shot to the last.

What made this project meaningful wasn't just the Microsoft name attached to it. It was the collaboration — working closely with the organising team, understanding what they needed, and delivering something that actually served the event. That's the job done right.
